IDEA: Begin doing something you've always wanted to do. The momentum of that first step will propel you onto the next.

It was the summer of 1987. I pulled through yet another 70-hour week in the sweaty New York rat race. In truth my race really was a cheaply glorified treadmill complete with phantom buildings, people and cars. I was mid-thirties, divorced, no kids and sole caregiver for Mom and her Alzheimer's. I smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day and panted profusely while climbing the 6 steps to my thousand-dollar a month rented apartment. My dream of escaping this trap fed my days and filled my nights. And I decided that I could not wait around for a miracle.

I got up and left, and took Mom with me. The very first step in that wild journey was the moment I picked up my phone, dialed my friend, and heard myself blurt : I'm moving to Santa Fe. The encouragement I received from her led me to the next step and then the next.

From that first step to this day is for me a 16-year miracle that continues to grow...husband, children, friends, my perfect career, and a home in a beautiful city that is never sweaty. In fact, I bless the Seattle rain every day of my life!

TOOL: Create your own miracles with this simple routine.

1. Pick a time each week when you can dedicate your attention to something you really want. This can be 5 minutes or 2 hours. What's important is that the time be dedicated and that it be regular.

2. On the top of a sheet of paper write your goal or dream Be as specific as possible.

3. Brainstorm a list of things that need to happen for your dream to be realized. Include people to call, books to read, websites to search, things to purchase and so forth. Break down some of the more complicated actions into "10-minute Intentions" or something that can be done in less than an hour. This way you will always have time to do something each week that will move you toward your goal.

4. Each week choose items from your goal/dream page to transfer to your current planning process. (Your To Do list, appointment book, palm pilot, etc). Take a few minutes to reassess and update your goal and jot down more ideas. This regular attention makes it real. And each week you are closer to fulfilling your dream.
